Key for the
abbreviations
REG: the time period you have to arrive for same day registration for an event
RDS: scheduled start times for the games of the tournaments
TL: time control - the speed at which the games are played. SD/60 or G/60 (sudden death in
60 minutes, or game in 60, for example) mean all the moves in the game must be made in 60
minutes. A time limit of "35/60, SD/30," for example, means the first 35
moves have to be made in 60 minutes, and the rest of the game in 30 minutes.
SS swiss system - this is a method of pairing a chess tournament where in each round, you
are paired against an opponent with a similar score. If you win your first two games,
you'll play someone who also has, or if you lose your first two games you'll be paired
against a fellow unfortunate.
PZ - Prizes, the cash you can win for winning the tournament, or doing the best in your at
your rating range and section.
RR round robin - the other method for pairing a chess tournament, where you play one game
against each opponent in your section. Quads are events where the field of players is
divided into groups of four, by rating, and each group is a small round robin.
USCF the United States Chess Federation. This means that the event is rated (pretty near
all of our tournaments are) and you must be a member of this organization, as they are the
people who keep track of the ratings.
