YOU CAN STILL JOIN THE WEDNESDAY NIGHT TOURNAMENT [8/17]
I did not make this clear in the original post, but anyone can get a couple of half point byes for missed rounds in our current Wednesday night tournament. So of course, you can enter tomorrow night with a bye for the missed first round. (Actually this is true for any of the swiss tournaments we run: if you get up too late on a Saturday for a Whiz Blitz, just show up before round two and enter with a half point bye.) And also, if you can’t make each of the next five Wednesdays, another half point is available. There is even another possibility. I took a bye in the first round because we had an even number of players. I would be willing to play a make-up game for anyone who still wants to play round one. All of the young thugs will tell you I’m a ready source of easy rating points. Let’s mention another possibly for getting in a game, which is also true for all of our tournaments. That is, if you drop in to visit the club on a weekday night, or during a weekend, and we have a odd number of players for any round, we are more than happy to let you play, for free, as a houseman for a round or more. TOURNAMENT DETAILS Five rounds left to play. Each Wednesdays thru September 17th. Game in 75 minutes with a ten second delay. $20 club for members and $25 for non-members. Prizes will be free entries to Castle events, ranging from more expensive Think formats to our cheaper one-day tournaments. We plan on starting at seven, and getting you out of there by ten o’clock easy. You will need to call my cell at 651.280.5473, if you’re running late, and for those who really want to participant, but, say, finish work at seven, I will hold the starting of their clocks until 7:10.
Zack Tverstol, Jeff Chander, and Will Dobbs are among the contestants on Wednesday.

The Minnesota Senior Chess Championship is August 21st and 22nd at the Castle. But for those of you who are not over fifty, and are looking for tournament that weekend, consider a road trip to southern Minnesota and a chance to play new people.
20, 21 August
THE JACKSON OPEN
Four games, swiss pairings. Game in 90 minutes + 5 sec delay. Rounds times are 7:30 Friday evening, and then 9, 1 and 5 on Saturday. Registration from 7 to 7:50 PM. The site is the Senior Community Center (next to the public library) at 300 3rd Street, Jackson MN 56143. Entry fee is $25 by August 18th, and $30 at site. Contact Sam Smith at 507.847.4929. Prize fund (based on 24, with $500 guaranteed) $300, $200, $100. Club regular Riaz Khan has played this event, and highly recommends it.

TWENTY PLAYERS AT THE CLUB [8/07]
And over half of the players in this weekend's Think are K-12s, including three out the top four players. Top guys is Matt Dahl, testing his newly reacquired 2200 level number. Prashnatha Amarasinghe is back from California having just finished a shared fifth in the Denker tournament, and Andrew Tang is trying out his brand new expert rating. It’s not too late to get in. You could even show up at 3:45 this afternoon for round three, and we’ll give you a couple of half point byes. Andrey Chernov could use a helping hand against this horde of chesspunks.

ANOTHER FORMAT FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION [8/04]
Influenced by Will Dobbs, and others who like their chess slower, we are going to offer another tournament choice at the Castle. Starting next Wednesday will be round one of a six round swiss, played at game in 75 minutes plus a ten second delay, from August 11th to September 17th. Our long-time members will be reminded of the old “Hurricane” events that Vince Berg and Dan Voje ran on 2nd Ave. Registration will be from six to six-fifty, with the intention of starting at seven o’clock sharp, so that you can get out by ten. We will be going to the “low entry fee-low prize fund” range, the anti-Goichberg model. (Perhaps $20 members, $30 others, with prizes consisting of free entries to upcoming Castle events. Let me think.) You will need to call my cell at the above number if you’re running late, and for those who really want to participant, but, say, finish work at seven, I will hold the starting of their clocks until 7:10. Yes, the old Hurricanes have a special place in my heart, for it was at one of them that I actually defeated Michael Yang. Of course, he was a mere child back then (but I was still a worn old man; it wasn't that long ago). Speaking of Michael, congratulations to him for his first place finish (shared with another) in the recent Cadet tournament.

THINK TOURNAMENT NEXT WEEKEND [7/31]
First full weekend of August, the seventh and eighth, will feature a Think format event at the Castle. Game in an hour with ten second delay. Seven rounds.

VERY STRONG FIELD FOR THIS WEEKEND’S EVENT [7/16]
Check out the pre-registered for the 2nd FIDE event at the castle. The first one drew 45. Escape the heat and come play with us.

DOING ANYTHING THURSDAY? TRY OUR SPECIAL [6/30]
Taking a moment to plug our long running Thursday Knighter tournament. It will be five rounds in July, cause there’s five Thursdays. Last month 14 players participated, including three with ratings of over 1900. Norm Myrin, the TD for lo these many decades, is very generous with half point byes, so some rounds lost due to weeks of vacation are not a problem. The charge is $10 for club members, and this month non-club members can get in for just $15. That is the figure that was misprinted in the Northern Chess News, so we are calling it a special, and probably going back to $20 in August. Register by 7:15. Game starts at 7:30 with a time control of all your moves in two hours.

THE OLD LION ROARS AGAIN [6/27]
The annual Minnesota Blitz Championship at the Roseville Skating Oval this Sunday featured a triumph of maturity. For although Victor Adler was very nearly the oldest of the field of 27, he held off a pack of grandchildren to take clear first. And by “grandchildren” I don’t mean sweet young kids, although we had a number of those. I mean the talented group of young predators a whole two generations behind him, whose fresh nerves and young eyes give them a big edge in the quick, high-pressure game of five minute chess. (Plus nowadays,I bet, they play a lot more of it than Adler.) One of those chesspunks, his very own student, Matt Dahl, was actually ahead of him going into the last game. Matt had just beaten Robert Donahue, while Victor only held Andrew Tang to a draw. But in the second game (in this format, you play two games against each opponent, one with each color) Matt lost, while in a good position Andrew Tang made an illegal move and also lost.

SCHEDULE UP THROUGH AUGUST FIRST [6/23]
We have just a speed demon on the Independence Day Weekend, but there will be the usual Monday night Action Quad on July 5th. The next weekend is a Think. And note the big event on July 17th and 18th, another FIDE Swiss tournament. For online registration: Please visit: http://Chess.MN/events  (Advance entry fees will be valid until July 15th, 2010 for online registration). The first edition held at the Castle drew over forty people.

KEVIN BU SWEEPS UP THE MAYO CAFETERIA [6/14]
No, he doesn’t have a summer job. (Not as a janitor anyway; chess semi-pro, maybe.) This refers to his performance at the Rochester Grand Summer Open, where The Odious One went five and oh. He had to defeat Matt Dahl and Prashantha Amarasinghe on his way to victory. Hmm… could this bode well for the Eden Prairie HS team at next year’s scholastic championship? Kevin will be joining Michael Yang there, and the two guys he beat are the top boards of last year’s winners, St Thomas Academy. Well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves, and back to school already. Lets have summer first.

First place in the Amateur section was Samarth Chakrasali. This will be another name we’ll have to make an effort to master, as he was at only 951 when he played in our first Scholastic event at the Castle last December, and is 1505 after last weekend. He played in five of our events in the last six months, again confirming that the Castle is where sweet young kids are transformed into fearsome chesspunks. Other club members with notable results includes Richard Durocher who gained 51 points on his way to a class prize, and the two Weatherspoon brothers, both of whom took second place in their respective sections.. Thanks to Matt Dahl and Dennis Mays for another fine event. Also a nod to Sisira Amarasinghe, who aided on the computer and was up all Friday night getting it to work.

If you clicked on our site in the last few days you beheld a smiling blonde babe. Sorry for the shock. Our domain name lapsed temporarily. I apologize, that the only time this site has some eye-candy, it's is when the internet police take us over.

HEADING SOUTH FOR THE CHESS WARS
A reminder that we are closed tomorrow, as most of us will be down in Rochester for their Grand Summer Tournament. We had a good turnout, 16 players, at the Castle for the satellite round, including four experts. Two of them, Bill Murray and Matt Dahl, drew each other. So you can still enter Saturday morning, with a half point bye and get a tough game. Riaz Khan is doing that. Or, like Richard Durocher, play in the one day schedule. I'm looking forward to my favorite chess road trip!

ROCHESTER NEXT WEEK HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
We will be holding our usual satellite round at the Castle to support the Rochester event. This is where you can play the Friday night round up here in the Metro area on Wednesday evening. I will open at seven, and we can get started by 7:30. Click on the above Schedule key for tournament details. The Castle will not be open June 12th, but we will have a full, 14 round speed demon on the following Sunday.
UPDATE: Looks like a very strong field, with most of the dangerous young punks, like Matt Dahl, Prashantha Amarasinghe, Kevin Bu and Dave McNeil. Also note: if you want to drop in Wednesday night to check out the games, you could have a chance to play a free game as a houseman, if we have section with an odd number of players.

MEMORIAL WEEKEND FINDS US OPEN EACH DAY
If you’re not going to Chicago for the big Open, stop in and see us. We have a scholastic quick chess/team event Saturday, and Quad format tournaments both Sunday noon and Monday evening. Details on the right. The following weekend, the first one in June, should be a Think, as it has been a long time since we offered this favorite format. Rochester is coming up the weekend after that.

GAMES FROM THE EVENT(5/23)
You can replay the games from the FIDE event at the Monroi site: www.monroi.com

STRONG FIELD SHAPING UP FOR THIS WEEKEND [5/20/10]
Led by the Castle teammates, Kevin Wasiluk and Arkady Shemyakin. Dr Iwu is coming down from Duluth. The return of Jimmy Simonse! Add in several more experts. Yes, this will be a very exciting group of players. The deadline for online registration has been extended to Friday.
UPDATED INFORMATION FOR THE FIDE SWISS TOURNAMENT  [5/13] That page includes a link you can use to register online. This is the next big chess tournament to be held at the Castle, on the weekend of May 22nd and 23rd.

FINAL RESULTS OF THE CLOSED .

Minnesota Closed 2010: Premier Section
John Bartholomew and Victor Alder drew this morning, which leaves John a full point ahead of the field. He plays Sean Nagle in the last round, and Sean will have to win to share the championship. Victor could then  join this group by also winning. update - both of the guys who had to win did, so we have three co-champions, with Nagle getting first place on tiebreak. That is important in this case, as with more than two co-champions, only the top guy has his ticket punched for next year's Closed. Congratulations to Sean Nagle, Victor Adler and John Bartholomew!

TCCL BANQUET TO BE AT THE CHESS CASTLE [4/23]
On May Seventh, starting at six PM, we are hosting the Twin Cities Chess League Banquet. The plan is to open at six, and offer people some good catered food for $15. It will be bring your own bottle, if you like something to drink, with perhaps an informal blitz tournament afterwards. Or just stay and visit. In recent years the Olive Garden has been a convivial site, but they were never that great in giving us our own space, our own section. And the many kids on the TCCL teams should find the Castle more amiable and affordable. Another chance for more folks to become acquainted with our space. For those who really enjoyed the classier format, especially those who like to please their wives, we would still like to hold another event down the road and later in the calendar. It wouldn't hurt us to try and be social more than once a year.

PAIRINGS FOR ALL THREE SECTIONS OF NEXT WEEKEND'S CLOSED PLAYOFFS [4/17]

And find the results entered for the first round Friday night. Look to this site for the games to be posted as we get them entered.

THE BIG OKOBOJI EVENT IS THIS WEEKEND.
They already have 33 players, lead by GM Yermolinskey and 6 others over 2000.

With the reminder that instead of playing the Friday night round down in Spirit Lake, you can play that game up here at the Castle on Wednesday night.

CLEAN UP ON YESTERDAY’S SCHOLASTIC CHAMPIONSHIP [3/29]
Find the individual and team standings through the link just below. Before we turn to recaps and congratulations, there some items to be noted.

Anyone who went home with a trophy that has only a paper title plate needs to e-mail me their address (at danvoje@chesscastle.com.) so we can mail them a replacement plate. Caught some of these after the awards ceremony, but about five are left.

One of our TDs, Sisira Amarasinghe was nice enough to lend out his Chronos clock, but never got it back. It was in a black padded carrying bag with his name on it. It’s a cream colored, with non-touch buttons, and a chesshouse sticker. Let’s do the right thing, or encourage an acquaintance to do so.

Unclaimed trophies and other assorted lost items left behind can be claimed at the Chess Castle whenever we are open. And if we didn’t pick up your particular missing black double-weight bishop, you can dig through the Orphan Box and perhaps find a replacement. And if it’s a trophy you show up for, I’ll get the guys up from their blitz games to applaud. It’ll be like you didn’t even miss the awards ceremony!

I have to process the USCF memberships and then get the event rated. That should be by Wednesday. If you gave us incomplete information, or slipped through the cracks, expect to hear from me.

And we cannot sign off without a sad nod to the great Vasily Smyslov, who died just before our big event got started.

FINAL STANDINGS (INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM) FOR 2010 MINNESOTA SCHOLASTIC

SATELLITE ROUND FOR THE OKOBOJI [3/22] corrected as to date
John Flores is again organizing his fine event down in northern Iowa for the weekend of April 16th through the 18th. Details can be found here. You can play the first round up here at the Chess Castle on Wednesday, April 14. Registration is from 6:15-6:45 with the game to begin at 7:00. Time control is game in 90 minutes. This will be instead of the Friday night round down there, so you just have to show up Saturday morning. GM Yermolinskey has committed to play, in the tournament and at a simul. So this event is a nice replacement for the vanished and much missed Governor’s Cup of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, as the shortest drive to play a Grand Master.

LATEST NEWS FROM THE CASTLE [3/22]
Big round of applause for the winners in the top section of this year’s Twin Cities Chess League, our very own Champions Of The Castle. There was a chance that they could have been caught in the last round, but they put that possibility to rest by crushing Pawn America on each of four boards. An special thanks to our top board, Kevin Wasiluk, who finished the season with a perfect score of seven and oh, against the best players in the league. He was the only player on any board, in any section, that had a perfect score over all seven games. Very impressive! That we won our first league championship has a lot to do with the return of Big Jim Hove, one of the finest people ever to have managed out chess club, who has not played rated chess for over a decade due to work and family commitments. But we drew him back this year to play on board two. The last slots of this winning team were filled by long-time teammates, Andrey Chernov and Professor Arkady Shemyakin. Congratulations to these mighty chess warriors! Look for the trophy to appear at a honored spot at the club, and I have got to get then together for the team photo.

Our farm team, starting out in the Bronze Section, also finished in first place. We were co-champions with the Burnsville High School team. So we will be moving up to the Silver Section next year. The regulars were Dan Voje, Don Aldrich, Efraim Marquina-Lopez and Charles Minskey, with David Dahl as the crucial bench player/team doctor. We will miss Charles, both on next year’s team, and at the Castle itself, where he one of our most frequent and pleasant participants. He is going back to New Orleans, the place he loves, in a few weeks.

Apologies for the lateness of recent tournament reports. We are caught up now. That includes the Spring Whiz Blitz from two weekends ago, that was won by the a fore mentioned Andrey Chernov. Another big recent winner is Zach Tverstol, who finished first in both the John Baker Think, and the Vernal Equinox Tornado, in successive weekends. It was also nice to see Michael Yang and Wilson Gibbins at this Sunday’s quick chess event.

OUR CLOSED PLAYOFF NOMINEES [3/10]
Just click on the above title to go to the page showing all of the qualifiers for this year’s Closed Playoffs. This will be held April 23rd through 25th at the Chess Castle. I am getting started on reaching out to the top people, to get their commitments to playing. This is a $50 check, made out to MSCA, that is returned to the players after they finished ALL of the playoff rounds. If you are one of the good/lucky players who have made it to the Closed, go ahead and fire that check out to me at… Dan Voje, 2015 Central Ave NE, #411, Minneapolis MN 55418 I will be running into a many of these guys at this night’s final round of the Twin Cities Chess League. So bring your checkbook.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS FOR THE MSCA [3/10]

Please note, especially you guys sending in your registration forms for the Minnesota Scholastic Championship at the end of the month, that our state chess organization now has a new address. We have given up the old PO Box (#582754) at the main Minneapolis Post Office, and now get our mail at the Chess Castle site, which is 1121 Jackson St NE, #134, Minneapolis MN 55418. This saves us a bit of money, and should get your mail to us processed quicker. There is a forwarding order for the old box, but help get your registration to us faster, and send it to the Castle.

I’ll take this moment to mention last Saturday’s turnout, which was 20 players for the Spring Whiz Blitz. February was very slow for the club, and we need more business. It was a real family affair with two father/son teams (the Tangs and the Dokkens) and a pair of brothers (the Rancours). The event was won handily by Andrey Chernov with 4.5 out of five.

We have also heard from Frank Johnson, to say he will return from Oregon to play in the Minnesota Closed Championship. Excellent! We are all looking forward to the Nagle / Johnson rematch, among others. I have been given the job of getting the commitments from players for all three sections of the Closed. It will be played April 23rd through the 25th at the Castle, with Dave Kuhns directing. I’ll have a webpage up for the qualifiers and the top alternates in a couple of days, and be reaching out for their tournament deposits.

[3/3]
This Thursday night at the Castle, being played alongside the usual Thursday Knighter tournament, will be game one of the Dan Voje / Adam Bissonette, mini-match to decide which of us goes to the Amateur Section Playoffs. The young man finished fifth in that section at last month’s Minnesota Open, which would usually get him a spot in the playoffs except that a) there are two returning guys from last year, as Kevin Ahtou and I are co-champions and b) neither of us has managed to disqualify himself by climbing into the ranks of expert in the intervening year. (Well I did a couple of times, but always got pulled back down to Class A, mostly by my so-called friends and assorted chesspunks and thugs) It doesn’t seem right that old guys should soak up two of the coveted spots and push aside the only player who got four points in the Open while not qualifying. So I am being noble and giving the lad a chance to get to the Closed. One of us will join Dane Zagar, Christopher Gill, Vladimir Malstev, Efraim Marquina-Lopez and the afore mentioned Kevin Ahtou in the Amateur Closed.

Yah, I know, that does sound a false note. My real motivation is to achieve sweet revenge against Adam, and by extension, all of the horrid little brats who have lately turned me into an object of ridicule. Justin Kleist at the last TCCL (I was the only one of eight players on our two teams not to win his game) or Daniel Lekah down in Rochester. Enough of that.

(I’m remembering a splendid National Geographic special about African wildlife, that featured a scene with a bunch of young hyenas chasing after an old, sickly, ratty lion. They were having a fun time tormenting him. Right up to the moment when he spins about and breaks one of their backs! Good TV! I sho’da taped it.)

So come and play in this month’s Thursday Knighter, and cheer me on. Or play yourself. At game in two hours, this is the slowest game of chess we offer at the Castle. There are four Thursdays this month, so the event will be a four round Swiss. The TD, Norm Myrin is very accommodating in giving players a half point bye for nights they cannot play, and sees that everyone gets a game when if they do show up. Just be there by 7:15 to register.

FRANKY WINS THE OPEN [2/22]
His given name is Francis. And he goes now by Frank. But those who have known him for years, and watched him grow as a chess player, may still find themselves referring to him as Franky. But after this weekend it will have to be Mr. Johnson to you. For Frank Johnson faced off against Sean Nagle in the last round of the 2010 Minnesota Open, as the only two with four straight wins, and defeated him in a long tough game. Nagle is our current state champ, notable lately for hogging first place in just about every tournament he entered in 2009. And he went up the exchange against Frank on the last move of the first time control. But his castle position was locked up by enemy pawns, and Frank went from defending well to pressuring hard. The game lasted a few minutes short of six hours, and all of them were on Frank’s clock! Congratulations to our new Minnesota Open Champ. Especially given the strong field of three IMs and ten other Masters. Victor Adler came in second, followed by Sean Nagle, Keaton Kiewra, Wilson Gibbons and John Bartholomew.

FINAL PRE-REGISTERED LIST [2/19]
Here is your last chance to click on the above heading and verify all your information. Or just take a moment to admire the power of this year’s field. I was going to put a note behind the names of those who need to renew their MSCA memberships, but there’s just too many of you. That is no surprise; now is the customary time of year for that. So to see if your membership is current, go here. We hope to see you all the next three days, as players or visitors. If you need to reach the tournament at the last moment, I’ll have my cell, so just call 651.280.5473.

CHECK OUR WEBSITE TOMORROW MORNING [2/18]
The pre-registered list for the Minnesota Open will be updated tonight with all of the last minutes changes and corrections. Please check in tomorrow morning to verify all your information. Some of you will find reminders that your USCF or MSCA memberships are expired.

JUST A WARNING ON YOUR MEMBERSHIP [2/18]
So you got the February/March edition on the Northern Chess News and figure your membership must be current. Well, for the vast majority that is true. But be aware that I also mailed out copies to those who expired in the last three months. We don’t usually do that, but with the biggest event of the year coming up tomorrow, we wanted more people informed. It is also a good idea to check the status of your USCF membership online and make sure that is current. That way we don’t have to chase you around the playing hall.

UPDATED EARLY REGISTRATION LIST UP FOR THE MINNESOTA OPEN [2/14]

VICTOR ADLER IS IN!

Now shows all entries received through Sunday.

It looks like a very tough crowd. Lead by the returning John Bartholomew, who is one crummy rating point anyway from 2500. He'll be looking for someone to beat it out of. Maybe enough to scare me back to the Amateur section. Also of note are the large number of people from out of state. We have three from Illinois, a couple from Missouri, and some guys from Iowa. To go along with the usual pair from Superior, Wisconsin. You can still enter at the early rate at tonight's Twin Cities Chess League, or at either weekend event at the Castle.

JELLIEFISH AND ZACK TACKLE THE TORNADO [2/09]
Both of these guys played last night's Action Quad, and both have committed to showing up Saturday for Artur's birthday party (details on the right). Your chance to come over, get warmed up for next week's really big tournament, and check out the rumors on these two characters. The gossip being, that at 2250 and 2150 respectively, these two schmoes cannot, really (how to say this diplomatically), cannot really carry the freight. Their knees might be shaking under the load of a pair of unsustainable ratings. We at the Castle are green; we recycle our pop cans and plastic water bottles, and support sustainability. So lets recycle some rating points.

One does has to admire their willingness to play at game in 45, something that scares off most strong experts and masters. And be assured that I personally am not calling them out. Anybody at Rochester who saw me lose the very last game finished, in one move, to a small child can guess I'm very humbled.

The penultimate round of the Twin Cities Chess League is this Friday. Our own top team, The Champions of the Castle, are now in first place, with the big showdown coming next month, when they close out the season with a match against their nearest rivals, Pawn America. Now that we got  Big Jim Hove back to the chessboard, holding down board two, we are finally on track to finish first in the TCCL, and get a nice trophy for the club. A big piece of this year's success has to go to Kevin Wasiluk, who has a perfect score on board one.

THIS THURSDAY AND FRIDAY AT THE CASTLE [2/02]
(An addition- if you have already registered with Rochester and want to play Thursday night up here, just show up, that is no problem.)
Lot of events happening. On Thursday, we will be playing the satellite round of the Rochester Open at our site in the Waterbury building. They play a format of five rounds, game in an hour, one Friday night and then four on Saturday. Metro players don’t have to head down to Rochester Friday, but can instead play their first game up here, Thursday night, and then take that score down and join the rest of the field for round two Saturday morning. So far we have entries for Matt Dahl (easy for him, as with his latest rating of exactly 2200, he gets to play for free), Bill Murray, Prashanthan Amarasinghe, Andres Hortillosa, Charles Minskey, John Larson and possibly Dave Tykwinski if he can get a ride. We will register people from 7 to 7:20, and play game in an hour starting at 7:30. And you have several options to make this a one day tournament. You can play an accelerated schedule, with two games in an half hour Saturday morning, or, just like Mr. Bill, just take a half point bye for round one. (He has to work Thursday night.) Full tournament details are on the right. And let me add the Mayo site is extremely nice, with a very generous prize payout.
FRIDAY NIGHT POTS – at the Castle. Zach Tverstol has a one hundred dollar Games by James gift certificate for first place. Open at six-thirty, but the beauty of this format is that you can show up any time that night, and jump in. Ten dollar fee, with a five dollar buy-in. This is basically speed chess played with poker chips. Trash talk allowed, but no mother jokes! If you are new to the format, drop in and they’ll explain it to you.

SEAN NAGLE WINS WINTER OPEN [1/18]
Sean cruised to a 5-0-0 win of the Winter Open. About 100 players competed in several sections. I will post the link as soon as it is rated. Thanks to MSCA and Dave Kuhns for running a great event. You can stop by the Chess Castle with your game on Tuesdays  and impress your friends with your stunning play.  http://www.uschess.org/msa/XtblMain.php?201001179651

SHAPING UP AS A STRONG WINTER OPEN [1/13]
We have fifty pre-entries right now, lead off by four master level players. If your name should be on this list, e-mail me at danvoje@chesscastle.com . And be forewarned that I already have entries for the Minnesota Open from Sean Nagle, and a certain John Bartholomew!

UPCOMING EVENTS [1/10]
The Winter Open at the Roseville Oval Jan. 16-17, The Rochester Winter Grand in RochesterFeb5-6, A Think at the club Jan 30-31 and The Minnesota Open in Plymouth Feb 19-21. The Rochester details are on the schedule page and the MSCA events are here: http://minnesotachess.org./page.php?52    We may play round one of the Rochester Grand at the club so you do not have to stay overnight in Rochester. Check with Dan or watch for details.

MR. BILL AND MATT DAHL ARE OUR NEW CHAMPIONS [1/04]
They both finished ahead of a field of 24 with the score of 5.5 out of seven. http://www.uschess.org/msa/XtblMain.php?201001035221

OFF TO OUR CHAMPIONSHIP [1/02]

Is this not premier chessplaying weather? Hope to see all of our club members, and those who would like to be club members, at the Waterbury today. Must have 12-15 pre-registered right now. If you feel you qualify as a regular by the below definition, come make your pitch. We offer half point byes for any two rounds, and would recall that Arkady Shemyakin finished clear first some years back just that way. Number to reach the club is
651.280.5473.

CHANGE IN QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE CHESS CASTLE CHAMPIONSHIP
NOTE: Although we have previously announced
that this event would only be open to annual members, after discussing the standard with Roger Hale and some other players, we have decided to also let in club regulars who would of met the standard in past years, provided that they at least pay the monthly membership fee of $15. The definition of "club regular" was anyone who played at least six Saturday tournaments (including Thursday Knighters and Thinks) throughout 2009. I would give partial credit for quick chess, Monday action quads, etc. Please e-mail me at danvoje@chesscastle.com or call me at 612. 706.2865 if you think that you would qualify as a regular. Don't just show up Saturday morning and presume that I'll just let you in. An example of a player who make the cut is Kevin Wasiluk. He has been very active at our club over the years, has twice been club champ, and, most importantly, is now leading the Chess Castle TCCL team on first board with a score of 4 our of 4 this season!
Tournament details on the right. Please note that we are also open Friday for a one day tournament.

SAY FAREWELL TO THE MAHOWALDS THIS TUESDAY [12/27]
Click here for the details of their big party. Gee, us chess players don't always need to beat in each other's heads when we get together. We could just come together and be social, and to say thanks and goodbye. Refreshments are being served.

MERRY CHRISTMAS (12/25)
Prashantha Amarasinghe won clear first in the Mpls. Open.  Beating Victor and Kevin, and drawing Sean. Quite a strong event thanks to the Warren Stenberg Trust.  Full crosstable at :  http://www.uschess.org/msa/XtblMain.php?200912202241   Also Matt Jensen's annual Grand Winter Open is posted on the schedule page. A great event where we get to beat up on some Iowa guys! MSCA's Winter Open and the State Open are just around the corner so stop by and get some practice before the big events. Monday Quads are strong and and Dan assures that there are no byes.

Half Time at the Minneapolis Open
Stop in and visit today if you have a chance. Admire our Christmas tree, and the power of this mighty field of players.

NAGLE AND WASILUK WANT THIS CITY TITLE [12/18]
Sean Nagle is our current Minnesota State Champion. Kevin Wasiluk finished a half point behind him at the Closed for clear second. He is also the number one board on the Chess Castle team at the Twin Cities Chess League, and currently sports a four for four record at that position. A big part of the reason that our guys are tied for first place with three rounds to go. They are both coming to the Castle tomorrow, along with those listed below.
YOU MIGHT WANT TO BRING A LAMP. A strange suggestion, but the extra room that we are getting for side activities is a little dim, if you are, for example, a chess mom who just wants to read her book. We will set up tables and chairs.
If you run a little late, save the phone number at the top of the page to reach the tournament director.
UPDATE: I realize that Saisree Ravi should also be on the list.

ADDRESS FOR EARLY ENTRIES TO THE MINNEAPOLIS OPEN [12/14]
Mr. Bill has pointed out that I am missing the address to send early entries for the Minneapolis Open. You can just mail them to me, Dan Voje, at 2015 Central Ave NE, #411, Minneapolis MN 55418. Looking for a good turnout. We had 40 players at the Scholastic event last Saturday, including eleven who were playing in their first rated chess tournament.
We also have access to an adjacent room for the weekend, where we'll have tables set up for players and family members to eat and analyze.

WHERE THE HECK IS MY NCN? [12/02]
Appy Polly Wollogies to you all. The Mahowalds are headed for California, the MSCA web guy Matt already working out there, and Daa, our publications person, to follow shortly. Only their daughter Morgan will remain, and can be found at the Castle on Tuesday Casual Chess Night. They have done a lot for our state organization in the last few years, and will be sorely missed. And so I volunteered to go back to being the Northern Chess News editor, a job I did for over a decade some years back. But massive family holiday time and the Class Championship has set me back. Look for the issue to hit your mailbox by the end of the week.

At least next weekend’s Castle events can be found on the right. Also on the schedule page you will find the details for our next big weekend tournament, The Minneapolis Open. This will be a five round event on the weekend before Christmas, December 19th and 20th, featuring a guaranteed first prize of $350. This is thanks to the Warren Stenberg fund. For yearly club members, please note that the first weekend of next year will be the invitational Club Championship, when our regulars gather to fight for a plaque on our illustrious trophy, the verifiable Stanley Cup of Minnesota chess.

And now that you are starting to miss Daa and Matt, set aside Tuesday, December 29th, to attend their Farewell Chess Party and tell them so. It will be held in New Hope from 4 to 8 PM, and feature a lot of events. We will put up a page for it in the next few days.

SEAN NAGLE SHOWS HIS CLASS, FIVE OTHERS WIN THEIRS [11/30] (event is now rated)
It became the policy of the MSCA, for the tournaments they sponsor, when in the case of tie scores for state titles and trophies, that the tie should be broken by playoff games rather than using tiebreaks. This usually means the leaders play a pair of speed games after end of the event on Sunday night. That happened in this year’s Region Six, when we were treated to such a playoff between Sean Nagle and Michael Yang. Chess really does become a spectator sport at that moment. The rest of us, happily finished with our long struggles, get to watch the big guys in a gladiatorial death match. Very entertaining.

I was looking forward to some more great speed games at the end of this weekend’s Minnesota Class Championship at the Radisson in Plymouth. But even with six separate sections, there were nothing but clear winners. The Masters/Expert section was won with a perfect score by the afore mentioned Mr. Nagle, our current state champion. He faced an impressive field of ten, including three other masters and some very strong, young experts. One of them, Matt Dahl, finished second at 3 and one. He was above 2200 a few weeks back, and looks to be headed back up there.

Dan Voje won Class A also with four wins, with Andres Hortillosa came in second. The next four sections were won with scores of three and a half. B winner was Lonny Arvidson, C was the favored Russ Swanson, D was Steve Helmueller, and E was Adam Mahood. Congratulations to them all. As usual, all four have finished with ratings above their classses.

We had a good turnout of 73 players. All of the folks coming down from northern Minnesota, and Duluth in particular, were a big help. Thanks also to William Broich for coming up from Iowa. Thanks to Sisira Amarasinghe for directing. Also of note: we had two brother and sister pairs in this event, and both of the woman had better scores than their brothers. I sure the guys will protest that they were playing in higher sections, but I know such an explanation would cut no ice with my six sisters. The gloating would be deafening. Hope they have nicer sisters.

(Below file is now corrected. Early list of players had outdated ratings. Sorry!)
EARLY ENTRIES FOR THE CLASS CHAMPIONSHIP TOMORROW
It looks like a good turnout. Could use a few more big guys. Tournament details on the right. Not to late for YOU to get in, just show up in Plymouth by 9:30 am. This is the only event all year where you are judged by a jury of your peers: No playing up a class is allowed.
CALL 651.280.5473 (FRIDAY NIGHT OR SATURDAY MORNING) IF YOU SHOULD BE ON THIS LIST BUT ARE NOT.

We already have the minimum of six players for each section, so we won't be combining any classes. I say that in hope we'll pick up a couple of 2000+ players.

UPDATE (11/17)The grand opening went well with Brenden Purcell holding on to take clear first. Full crosstable at  : http://www.uschess.org/msa/XtblMain.php?200911015871  . The Monday Action Quads are bringing in 8-10 players and the top quad is all experts. Matt Dahl is the newest Minnesota Master. Congratulations to Matt. The recent Think had about 20 players and was notable for all the byes that people took. Do chess players now have real lives?  Upcoming is the Minneapolis Open and the club Championship. MSCA is holding the Class Championship on Nov. 28-29. http://minnesotachess.org./e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?217  So please stop by and get back in the game.

HALFTIME AT THE GRAND OPENING [11/01]
Two perfect scores with two games left to go. Our old pots friend Ahmet has requested a bye for the noon round today (a big party he needed to recover from?), so Brendan Purcell can be considered in clear first now. Matt Dahl will be playing him and looking to become Minnesota's newest master. Great sporting interest. Speaking of which, the Dokken TV will be set up in the hall for the Viking/Packers game during our last round.

GRAND OPENING HAS 34 PLAYERS [10/31]
Led by Matt Dahl, whose current rating is 2199, and who no doubt really wants that next point. Drop in by 1:20 and get in with a half point bye! Or just visit and check out our new large chess painting, and the updated club trophy.

BIG PRIZE FUND FOR THIS WEEKEND [10/30]
We have an extra three hundred dollars donated for the Grand Opening Tournament this weekend. Add that on top of the usual 70% of entry fees that we are paying out. So there will be a guaranteed first place of at least $200, and second of $100, which of course would be increased if our turnout is good. We have already heard from Bill Murray, Jeff Chandler, Dave Tykwinski, Andres Hortillosa, Saisree Ravi and Vince Wisniewski.  TO REACH TD AT CLUB OR TONIGHT - 651.280.5473

NOTE: THE BELOW EVENT HAS BEEN MOVED TO THE ESPRESSO ROYALE IN DINKYTOWN.
POTS TOURNAMENT THIS SATURDAY NIGHT [10/29]

Zach Tverstol and the store, Games by James, are holding a pots tournament in Coon Rapids this coming Saturday night. This is a speed chess format that is explained by clicking on the Schedule link above. This could turn into a weekly event.

CHESSNUTS CHALLENGE IN MOORHEAD DRAWS STRONG PLAYERS [10/20]
GM Alex Yermolinsky and IMs Victor Adler and Sandor Kustar are all lured up to the Red River by the guaranteed $4,000.00 prize fund. This weekend will be the third edition of this tournament, and I well enjoyed the first two. I have a nephew's wedding to attend in St. Louis, and I'll be checking out the lavish chess club. Good luck to everyone else going up I-94, especially in any battles with the Canadians. Now that we are back to having a place to display the Minnesota-Manitoba match trophy, perhaps, in the case of our victory, someone can haul it back here. Although we are closed on Saturday to help out this outstate event, there is a Sunday quick chess tournament.

Dan celebrates his birthday in chess fashion with a cake from his brother Jerry and great food from his family. Roger Hale and Dan Voje are two of the forces behind the new site of the Castle Chess Club.

SUNDAY LEFTOVERS AT THE CASTLE [10/11]
We have a field of twenty for the Homecoming Think, now being led, with the only perfect score, by Sharif Usenov. Hope none of the rest of you spun out on an icy bridge on the way to join us Saturday morning. I saw a couple of accidents in the northern suburbs. Stop in today and visit if you have time to kill. The players should have the luncheon meat polished off themselves, but there should be cheese and veggies left for spectators. Eric Dokken also brought a TV to keep up with the game.

STOP IN SATURDAY NIGHT [10/08]
Even if your not playing in this weekend's Think tournament, stop in around seven in the evening for some snacks and refreshments. Also a reminder that this Friday is round two of Twin Cities Chess League.

UP AGAINST THE VIKINGS AND THE TWINS [10/05]
Yes, there will be a Action Quad starting at 7:00 tonight. And the premier of our Tuesday Night Casual Chess is tomorrow evening. The ball game may be over by seven, and in any case stop in on your way back from the Dome.

GRATIFYING TURNOUT FOR FRIDAY NIGHT [10/02]
It was very encouraging to see all the folks who showed up this Friday night to check out and support our new club site. We must have had a more than a dozen games going at one time, some blitz, some friendly, and also folks just dropping in to visit. Many people who I have not seen in quite awhile. A wide mix of ages and ratings. We were especially pleased by the number of memberships sold, several to folks who just don't get to play that much, who will not benefit from the entry fee discounts, but who just wanted to step up and support the club. With such a bedrock of goodwill, the future in our new space looks good. Very gratifying to see the affection the old Castle is held in.

NOTE: even action-chess-phobes like Mr. Bill and  Dr. Dahl are planning to play in Saturdays Whiz Blitz.  That also could be a surprising turnout! Well, we have the space for them and you.

SUPPORTING OUR GAME AND OUR CLUB [9/29]

Well, the last Saturday tournament was a happy mess. We had ten players show up for the six round action tournament (rapid chess, as the world at large calls it). It was a mess because Terry, the Bridge Center maven, came down in the middle of the second round and informed us that we would have to move our chessboards elsewhere, as the entire basement was going to be needed for an afternoon bridge tournament. She found spaces for us upstairs, where we played in a corner and endured the chatter of casual bridge.

Terry was not too bad a hostess during our two and a half years as chess refugees. We were never deferred to, but there was a good reason for that. Back at the start of 2007, after we had lost our lease at the old Polish Eagle Life building in Northeast Minneapolis, Kevin Ahtou stepped up and took it upon himself to find us at least a temporary site. He bargained hard with the Bridge Center, arguing that chessplayers were cheap, and we were only willing to pay $3 a day per player. This was a rock bottom price, so it is not surprising that we often felt treated like second class citizens, or like poor relations.

Despite the low prices, our club never flourished at 6020 Nicollet. Luckily for us, among the usual mass of grumbling chessplayers, there were a couple of guys who were actually willing to do something, and to wager something, to get us a site worthy of the royal game and a premier city chess club. That would be Roger Hale and David Kuhns, who planned and searched and decided on space at the Waterbury building at Broadway and Central. They now need others to step up in their own way, to make our long-running club a success. Of course, it would be great if you just showed up more and played.

However to finance a quality site, besides just the basic entry fees for the various tournaments, which are largely unchanged, we will be requiring a membership fee. After checking with clubs all over the nation, and working out the expenses, the mangers have decided on a yearly membership fee of $120. This works out to $10 per month. (The family rate is$180.) We hope many active tournament players in Minnesota, and those who simply love and wish to support our game, will be able to commit this much to the Castle. For those who can only pay monthly, the rate will be $15 per month. The minimum will be a $5 extra per day for each weekend event. That means the typical one day Saturday event, say a Tornado or Speed Demon, will go up from $20 to $25 for non-members. That is a small increase, when one considers how many years the basic $20 rate has not increased.

We have a lot more space than we have ever held, in a very stylish building, have fixed it up nicely, and are eager to show it off to as many players as possible. Everything is set up just for us. Tables, sets, bulletin boards, art, coffee, etc. It especially pleased me to haul the nice portrait of Dan Sullivan and Al Riley out of my closet and hang it on our walls. They were our first patrons who started this club over thirty-five years ago.

We don’t want anyone to feel unwelcomed if they are unable to afford memberships at any level, and can just pay the non-member fee for an occasional event. For as much as we are counting on loyal members to keep this going, we also hope for an increase in activity. There is room for up to sixty players. So there is room for you, and your friends.

LAST ACTION QUAD AT THE BRIDGE CENTER TONIGHT [9/28]
And then we open our new space to the public for the first round of Norm Myrin's long running Thursday Knighter on October first. These are the slowest time controls we offer at our club, game in two hours. It will be a five round tournament, as this month has five Thurdays. The Castle will be open six straight days, through the re-start of the Tuesday night Casual Chess. Details on the right, with the full schedule to be found by clicking on the key at the top.

OUR NEW HOME SWEET HOME
Very good news indeed. Starting on October First, we will be moving the Chess Castle of Minnesota into the above building, and holding our own space again after an exile of two and a half years. The new location is on the NW corner of Broadway and Central Ave, just a little under a mile east of our old site in Northeast Minneapolis. For the first time in our 35 years history, we will be on the ground floor. There is plenty of parking, and a short bus ride on Central Ave from downtown (the no. ten line). Our room is just back from the front door, and will accommodate tournaments of up to fifty or more players. Conflicts with noise and scheduling should be a thing of the past. Once again, you will be able to walk into a space dedicated to the royal game, with tables and sets ready to go. There will be coffee in the pot, pop in the cooler, chess books and magazines about, and bulletin boards with tournament announcements and results, news clippings, chess posters, etc; whatever we need to create a convivial space.

The effort and commitment to find new quarters has come mainly from Roger Hale and David Kuhns. Be sure to thank them, such as at this weekend’s Region Six. It is their intention to grow the club to the next level, where it can compare to the premier clubs in other major US Cities. They will need your support. Dan Voje will be back to managing the club. There will be a very active schedule, including the return of our Casual Chess Night. Stay tuned for more details.

NEWS FLASH ON THE REGION SIX (9/07)
Sean Nagle and Michael Yang tied for first at 3.5, with Sean winning the two game blitz playoff for the title and trophy. Leighton Zhao had a perfect score in the reserve section for clear first. We had 55 players and possibly the best site I have ever directed in.

DAN WINS SENIOR OPEN (8/24)
Our own Dan Voje won the Senior Open with a perfect +4-0 score. Details here:  http://minnesotachess.org./e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?213.0#post_230  Maybe Dan will be kind enough to post some thoughts.

FRANK AND WASILUK FIND PERFECTION IN FRANKLIN (7/27)
They both finished five-and-oh down at the Catfish Days tournament this weekend. Frank Johnson is now off to Oregon for a year and we wish him well. Kevin Wasiluk is heading to the US Open in Indianapolis, and we wish him well, too. James Kanne drew a little less than sixty people this year. We'll get in rated as soon as a couple of membership problems resolved.

THE CATFISH
If one were to do a survey of the most beloved chess events in our state, I suspect our premier tournament, The Minnesota Open, would only rank third. Second would be the Twin Cities Chess League (not too early to start assembling your team for September!), but in first place would be next weekend’s event, The Catfish. Very ironic, as you will never play in a smaller venue than Franklin, Minnesota. Chess is a big city activity in general, with only the largest Metro areas having enough critical mass to support our esoteric sport. But that doesn’t stop James Kanne, dairy farmer-tournament director, from drawing many of us down southwest, to his hometown for his annual event. He will personally cook you a great burger after the first round on Friday. For Saturday, you'll just have to walk two blocks and buy a great burger on Main Street. Bucolic site, strong competition. See you there.

This is a must for chess players who like their tournaments to be fun.
Small town charm and  a casino nearby. Bring something for the potluck.

THE CADET (7/10)
The Cadet Round Robin has started. I did not see a web site but two of Matt's games were highlighted.  Hang in there Matt!  http://main.uschess.org/content/view/9510/141/

CATFISH AND CADET (6/20)
The Catfish tournament information is posted on the schedule page. Also congratulations to Michael Yang and Matt Dahl for being invited to play in the National Cadet Round Robin. Details on the USCF online site when the event starts. http://main.uschess.org/content/view/9411/319/

DAHL, FRANK, FESHIR, DONAHUE HEADING SOUTH (6/18)
Those were the biggest of the one dozen people who played in the Metro round for the Rochester Grand Summer Open last night. The Frank is Frank Johnson, the Dahl and the Donahue are the younger ones. The Feshir is the one and only. Eight in the top section and four in the bottom. So there will be a lot of opportunities to play higher rated players this weekend.

If you don't feel like spending Friday night in Rochester, there is a one day schedule where you play two quicker games starting at 10:15. That is what I am doing, as a re-entry, being I was bushwacked by Frank. He is now a master level player, and as is typical for those with excessive ratings, doesn't bother with basic equipment, like a pen. But you know me; I'm a giver, so I lend him one of my lucky pens. Bad move on my part. I think I'll pick up some cheap Bics, roll them in a cat box, and stick them in a zip lock bag for the next such request.

You can also just get a half point bye for the missed Friday night round when you show up tomorrow morning.

Should be a nice day for a drive. See you there.

CONTACT INFO FOR ROCHESTER IN METRO (6/17)
You can reach me on my cell at 651.280.5473 on Thursday or Friday with any questions about getting to the Bridge Center on Thursday night, or details about the tournament in general. Especially if you are coming for the first time and run a little late you'll want to have that number. Looks like it will be a great weekend for chess!

ROCHESTER THIS WEEKEND, BUT LET'S BE CLEAR (6/16)
The format they play is five games, time control of an hour, with one round Friday night and then four on Saturday. If you just want to drive down Saturday morning, you don't have to take a bye for the missed Friday night game, you can play that game up here at the Bridge Center on Thursday night. So for Metro residents, the Thursday night round here replaces the Friday night round down there.

ROCHESTER ONLY TEN DAYS AWAY - PLAY ROUND ONE AT THE CASTLE (6/8)
They have the best playing area and the most generous prizes and goodies of any Minnesota tournament. The Rochester Summer Open is June 19th and 20th, and, as usual, you can play the Friday night round up here in the Cities, at the Bridge Center, on Thursday evening, the 18th. We will plan on starting this satellite round at 7:30 pm.

WASILUK AND HOLT WIN THE NORTH COUNTRY OPEN (5/17)
Click on Kelly Quads for the wallcharts and a brief update on the tournament. More later.

GOOD CHESS PLAYING WEATHER (5/15)
It'll be in the fifties and windy tomorrow, so come to the Kelly Inn. We are now up to thirty players, including
Victor Adler. Click on the above Schedule button to see the up to date list.

ALREADY UP TO TWENTY FOR NEXT WEEKEND (5/10)
Including both Frank Johnson and Kevin Wasiluk. With another five experts stacked behind them. Should be a strong turnout in an excellent site! Entries posted on Schedule page.

SEAN NAGLE WINS HIS FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP (4/30)
Three cheers for the hometown boy made good! This is his first win of Minnesota Closed Championship. Not that we were actually pulling for him. Despite having known him forever, and his being such a personable young man, let’s face it; anyone with a 2400+ rating is not a crowd favorite. One might as well pull for the New York Yankees. Especially after his fellow giant, Alex Balandin, and him agreed to an early draw in round three. A sign of mutual respect among the mighty, but the little people think they should beat on each other as hard as they beat us. No, going into the last round, we were hoping for Kevin Wasiluk and Frank Johnson, the new young guns, to pull a double upset and make the mighty pay for their non-aggression pact. And it was close, with all three games going to the end of the sixth hour of play, and into demanding positions. Wasiluk did upset Balandin, but Johnson was ground down by Nagle. The bottom two finishers, Tim Radermacher and Bryan Lange, were the last ones fighting, with the victory going to Tim.

Kudos to Sean Nagle! And a big hurrah to second place, the first board on the Chess Castle TCCL Team, Kevin Wasiluk.

FREE ENTRY FOR PRE-REGISTERED  MASTERS (4/29)
The North Country Open, coming up in three weeks at the Kelly Inn, is offering free entry to any pre-registered masters. Contact Bill. This is not to be taken as an attempt to lure them in to their doom. No, no, that misses it by a mile! No, it is just a sign of our respect for our chess superiors. Of course, should any of them suffer a lapse of intensity or concentration, and you go home with a boat load of rating points; well, it is a cruel game. Good hunting to all of our fellow schmoes!

OKOBOJI OPEN THIS WEEKEND (4/4)
Click here for details of the tournament. You can play the first round at the Bridge Center, on Thursday, 7:00 pm. Registration from 6:00 to 6:45. This looks to be a great event and we are happy to offer this option to Metro players who can't make it to Okojobi in time for the Friday night round. Be advised that if the Castle site doesn't work for you, one can turn this into a two day event either by using the accelerated schedule or through taking a half point bye.

If you are not familiar with the current club location, feel free to call Dan at 612.706.2865 with any questions.

STATE PLAYOFF SCHEDULE (4/4)
The schedule is posted for the MSCA playoffs. Our own Dan Voje will be playing and winning the Amateur section. The fast time controls play into his strength. Click on the Kelly Quads link and scroll down. This tournament will be held at: Midland Grove Condominiums Recreation Building 2299 Midland Grove Road  Roseville  MN 55113

Looking for a summer camp? Mr. Bill endorses Ed's.      http://www.edzelkind.com/

UPCOMING EVENTS (3/21)
North Country Open is planned for May 16-17, 2009. Details on the Kelly Quad link above. Chicago Open follows May 22-25, 2009. Check around for Hotel rates!! Bill  booked at $69.

KELLY QUADS (3/7)
Dan and Bill had a good turnout for their Quads. 20 players. Things went well.  We are holding another on March 21. See Kelly link above for results and details. Late Monday. Jeff and Andrey are the deserving club co-champions.

Jeff Chandler and Andrey Chernov the 2008 Chesscastle co-champions

Some pictures from the Minnesota Open. Not all of them were suitable for posting.

Our own Dan wins the AMATEUR SECTION .             The mighty Victor tied for first.

Tim Radermacher tied for 1st. after all these years, again.  Sean Nagle snuck in at 3.5 points.

Kevin Wasiluk reentered and qualified.      Future champ?

Obligatory cute kids.                                                                 Kevin Bu played well!

FIVE WAY TIE IN THE MINNESOTA OPEN (02/17)
Just a few notes on the big event of last weekend. The Premier section finished with five players on 4 out of 5. They were Kevin Wasiluk, Victor Adler, Frank Johnson, Tim Radermacher and Bryan Lange. At least the first two are listed in tie break order, so our own chess team leader walked off with the biggest trophy. The next two sections were won with perfect scores, Dan Voje in the Amateur and Luke Robson in the Reserve. The turnout was right on average for the state open, at around 200 players. The Plymouth Radisson once again served as an excellent site, and the staff of David Kuhns, Matt Mahowald and Ed Conway handled the complexity of many sections, two schedules, and a couple of side events very well. Here is the link to the crosstables:  http://www.uschess.org/msa/XtblMain.php?200902155441.0-12288810

OFF TO PLYMOUTH FOR THE BIG TOURNAMENT (02/13)
There are a lot of you who have entered early, and did not renew your state membership. Better bring extra money! Like $18 worth.

EARLY ENTRY LIST IS UPDATED THROUGH WEDNESDAY (02/11)
We are now up to 115 players for the five sections. That includes five masters in the open section.

Click on the button right above us to see who is playing. A lot of stout fellows are playing up a section or two, more interested in glory than prizes. Still have a few more trips to the main Minneapolis Post Office. Hope I find your entry there.

ROCHESTER TOMORROW, PLYMOUTH IN ONE WEEK (2/06)
Heading down to the Mayo Clinic tomorrow morning with Mr. Bill, to play the one day schedule. You can do the same thing, but, warning!, you will be playing the first two rounds at game in thirty, in the same pack as someone who has played over 2,400 such games in the last two decades! Be afraid, be very afraid. Or just wussie out like Mr. Bill and take a half point bye.

TO STILL ENTER THE MINNESOTA OPEN AT THE EARLY RATE you have two options. Just run into Dan Voje at tonight's TCCL, tomorrows Rochester Winter Tournament, or catch me at the Castle either during Sundays Quick chess event, or Monday at the Action Quad. Of course I'll be there - how do you think I amassed all those games!

AND THE MAIL IN DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED. Get it in the mail by Monday morning, and I'll see it in our mailbox in time to get you in. We are always trying to give you a break! You can find the tournament details by hitting the above Schedule button, and see whose already signed up by hitting the button on the far right.

STRONGEST CASTLE FIELD EVAH?  (2/03)
The Thursday night Metro round for the Rochester tournament now has Frank Johnson, Medhat Feshir, Mike Fellman, Bill Murray, Dan Voje and Leon Ding. Michael Yang and Matt Dahl are also strong possiblities. And Matt Jensen informs me that both Victor Adler and Tim Radermacher are playing this weekend. A frightening field to face! Maybe what helps draw all of these mighty masters and experts is the luxury of having your own table for the games. You feel like your playing Linares.

Just to clear any confusion, the game at the Bridge Center Thursday night replaces the game in Rochester on Friday night. Both fields meet up Saturday morning at the Mayo building. Note if you suffer a disaster at the Castle on Thursday (not hard with such competition) there is a re-enter option for Saturday, where for twenty bucks extra one can start over again with a half point bye, or play the in the accelerated field.

NEXT UP, ROCHESTER (2/02)
We are moving the announcement to our main page to make sure you catch it. Check out all the extra goodies. A reminder that you can replace the Friday night round at Rochester with a round at the Chess Castle, at the Bridge Center, on Thursday. We already have five people who are doing just that. Try and get there by 7:15 pm so we can start the clocks at 7:30. For those unfamiliar with our location, its at 6020 Nicollet Ave. Just take the Diamond Lake exit off I-35, go west two blocks to Nicollet, turn left, and you'll find the Bridge Center about a half mile down on your right, kitty corner from the Club Food. Any questions, call Dan at 612.706.2865 or danvoje@chesscastle.com .

And note, if you can't play any site Thursday or Friday, you can treat this as a one day event. Either play the accelerated schedule, where your first two games are played Saturday at game in 30, and you join the main field at round three (details below); or just take a half point bye for the missed first round. Well worth it, as you'll not find a nicer site, a better run event, and a more liberal prize fund anywhere in Minnesota for the rest of the year!

QUICK NOTE ON THE WINTER OPEN (2/01)
The Open section had 40 players, and finished in a three way tie between Victor Adler, Matt Dahl and Michael Yang. They each had four wins and one draw, the first two in their game against each other. Under 1700 Section had 70 players, and a clear winner, Vladimir Maltsev with a perfect score.
Don't forget that Rochester is next weekend, with a possible round one at the Castle Thursday night.

CHESS SEASON IS UPON US, FEATURING NEW EVENTS (1/28)
It’s not just the international tournaments at Wijk aan Zee and Gibraltar that makes this a high point in the annual chess calendar. It is also our very own big events, on the local scene. The two largest Minnesota tournaments are happening in the next three weeks. The first is the Winter Open, which is featured on the right, as it is starting this Saturday at the usual Roseville Skating Oval site. Please note that they are using Fischer mode on the time delays, which is very rare in this country. So it is a good idea to set your digital clock ahead of time (like right now) so that you are all set, and not contributing to what will certainly be a wave of confusion early Saturday morning. Another noteworthy feature at the Winter Open is the Saturday novice tournament, for beginners and unrated players. We have not held many of these of late, so be sure to point it out to any friends who have expressed interested in trying tournament chess. I really like this site; chess should share quarters with hockey, as they are both such brutal sports.

Two weeks after that is the big one, the 2009 Minnesota Open, from February 13th through the 15th, at its usual site, the Plymouth Radisson. All true chess players will of course be there! If you have a weenie excuse for not joining us in battle, yah better at least show up and visit a bit, so we don’t write you off as dead. Death is really the only acceptable excuse.

For the real hardcore, there is a very nice event right in between. It is another sweet road trip to Rochester, for another fine event courtesy of Matt Jensen and Dennis Mays. At a Mayo Clinic building, a remarkably spacious and comfortable site. Note these guys seem to always pay out a very generous prize fund, along with a lot of other goodies (drawings for ICC memberships, etc.) This is their usual format of a game on Friday night, and then four rounds on Saturday. As we have in the past, we are offering Metro players the option of playing that Friday night game up here in the Cities, at the Chess Castle on Thursday night. Just show up at the Bridge Center by 7:15 pm, and we’ll have you started by 7:30. For more details, click on the above schedule button.

Unlike previous years, you don’t have to make the cut for the Closed Playoffs to have yet more good chess to look forward to. Firstly, in March, there are two tournaments set up by Bill Murray at the Kelly Inn near downtown St. Paul. They are a pair of one day quads, with serious time controls and a very low cost. I have always liked the Quad format. You get three games, all against your rating peers, with a decent time control, which strikes a nice balance between not taking up your whole day, but yet having enough game time to think. More on these two later.

Finally, out at the end of April, and just across the border with Iowa, John Flores is organizing a very ambitious tournament, which already has a commitment from a Grandmaster, Alex Yermolinsky. The Okoboji Open: five rounds, three days, with a time control of game in two hours. This is down in the Spirit Lake area, which I am told is the scenic part of Iowa. We use to have the Governor’s Cup in Sioux Falls to look forward to every year, as an easy drive to Grandmaster competition. It sounds like this could be a worthy replacement for those fondly remembered tournaments. The Castle will, just as with Rochester, be offering the chance to play the Friday night game up in the Twin Cities on Thursday instead. You will be hearing more on our site as this gets closer, but mark the calendar now for April 24th through 25th. Who of us doesn’t love a chess road trip!

JEFF CHANDLER AND ANDREY CHERNOV ARE THE NEW CLUB CHAMPS (12/29)
Final standings are
here. Jeff and Andrey are worthy champions. Regulars at the club, their aggressive play was rewarded. With the delay of the NCN attendance was down. The site worked out well and will be used for some Quads in March. Click on Kelly Quads for details. The Bridge center is not ideal and this may help build up the club. Andrew Tang is a new kid in town. Be afraid, be very afraid. Luckily his dad can be house man. Thanks to Dan for running another perfect event!

OFF TO ST. PAUL (12/26)
Like the returning fish we are, it is off to the city that spawned us lo those many years ago. Stop by the Kelly Inn and visit us if you would like! There may even be houseman opportunities for those with a couple of hours to spare.

I'll leave you with a picture that I found on the chessbase website. In the midst of the obituary for Hugh Myers of Davenport, Iowa, known for "The Myers Opening Bulletin," there was a old photo of him playing a chess game. And the opponent was none other than our own Curt Brasket.

WITH A WEEK TO GO... (12/21)
We are still waiting to hear from you, if your name
is here. And don't worry if you can't find out until the last minute whether you can play. We would like to hear in advance, to make planning easier, but if it takes until Saturday morning to wheedle permission from your wife, you just need to show up at the Kelly Inn by 9:45 to get in the first round. And not even then! As with all Think Formats, we offer the options of taking up to two half point byes in any rounds. So don't even show up until three in the afternoon, and get a full point for the first two rounds. Or, for example, if you're already commited to a social event for all of Saturday evening, you can get a free point for the last two rounds that day, and still get home by four. Note that Arkady Shemyakin did just that three years ago, and then won all of the five rounds he played, and the championship that year. And back in town is another former champion, JellieFish, who hopes to still be here for the weekend. Jesse Koch has also reappeared, and offered to be a houseman, so some full point byes may be avoided. Details on the right. I do worry that with the NCN having disappeared, a few club regulars, ones who don't go online or haven't dropped in for awhile, may still be unaware of the tournament. Talk it up if you see 'em at a bus stop or coffeehouse.

APPY POLLY WOLLOGIES TO VINNIE (12/19)
I told you guys to come forward for any club regular overlooked for invitation to our prestigious championship. I thought I'd only get some borderline cases, that I had gone through the tournament files well enough not to miss any well-deserved players. Well, I goofed, as somehow the very longtime and very active Vince Wisniewski was missed. That I am capable of missing something is certainly no surprise to many of my chess opponents! Let me know if I have overlooked anyone else. (612.706.2865 or danvoje@chesscastle.com . )

Vinnie won't be able to play, though. He is going out to Vegas after Christmas to play in their big tournament. So are Roger Hale, Doug Olson and Roger Redmond. Good luck to them, at gaming tables if not the chess board.

YES, OUR EVENTS ARE ON! (12/17)
Just a note to assure any readers that our scheduled chess tournaments you see on this site are indeed being held. I am not sure what happened to the Northern Chess Newsletter, but our events are not contingent on being announced via your (snail) mail box. We have players and directors lined up for the two tournaments this Saturday and Sunday, and barring three feet of snow, they will be held.

I'm moved to reiterate this because our turnout has been very poor lately. We only had a quorum for the Action Quad on the 8th thanks to a couple of guys from Illinois, who are working at the airport, and stopped in for a local game. Poor Ed only got a couple of guys for the Minneapolis Open. I'm not sure what the problem is, whether it's the lack of a NCN, or the harsh winter weather, or the holiday season. The construction on 35W hasn't been a big problem lately in getting to the Bridge Center.

Only ten days to the club championship! If you are invited and coming, get on the ball and let us know! Details right below. Click right here to see who is coming.

LIST OF QUALIFIERS FOR THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP (12/10)
Click right here to go to the list, sorted alphabetically, of the club regulars. If you don't find your name there, and feel you should be, there is contact information on that page to reach me. It is quite possible that I have overlooked someone, so feel free to bring such a case to my attention.

Questions have come up as to how people qualify. The standard, which has been in effect for several years, is that a player must have participated in at least six serious events over the course of the year. This time we are lowering the bar to only four events, inasmuch as our present site is somewhat marginal, and has been on occasion, with the freeway construction, hard to get to. So that is only one Saturday tournament per quarter. We do give partial credit for quick chess events and action quads, and we count any swiss tournament twice for any clear winner. It’s the guys who regularly pay and play, that enable our club to go on, and this tournament is for them.

We are also requesting that anyone who intends to play contact me so I know if you are coming. The list should be up on the club walls in a few days, and you can just sign after your name there to indicate your participation.

UPDATED - Already added four more names, so we are up to 40.

TWO WEEKENDS IN DECEMBER - THE MINNEAPOLIS OPEN AND
THE CHESS CASTLE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
(12/04)
Go here for the details on these two tournaments. Well, actually, there is not a lot of detail on the Minneapolis Open, as we have yet to receive the NCN files. We do know it is being held the weekend after next, December 13th and 14th, by Ed Conway at the Bridge Center. Your standard three games Saturday and two Sunday, at a speed of game in ninety minutes with a ten second delay. Apparently there will not be a noise conflict on Sunday, that we often experience, as no bridge classes are being held that day.

It is those annoying conflicts that we usually have at the Bridge Center during two day events, that has inspired Bill Murray and Dan Voje to take the annual club championship to another site. That would be the Kelly Inn, where we held the popular Northern Open a few months back. Note that this is a by invitation only event, for club regulars (liberally defined). Look for the list to be put up here in a few days. The dates are 27th and 28th, right after Christmas.

RECENT NEWS (11/16)
While Dan is in Ireland taking a much needed vacation the local chess world moves ahead. Don Aldrich and Dave Kuhns are discussing new clubs at the news groups:  http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/MinnesotaChess/   . John Flores is starting a club in Iowa: http://www.fiorechess.org/news.php . The Class is less than two weeks away: http://minnesotachess.org./page.php?66 .

IMPORTANT CHANGE TO POTS NIGHT
The coffeehouse is closing at ten, so Zack is moving up the start time to seven pm. This is a tournament where you can show up late. Also note that trash talk will be allowed. (This is good news for me, as cutting remarks about my opponents is the strongest facet of my speed game.) For parking, you can find street parking within three blocks, or a pay lot at the same site, on the north side of the block.

Halloween Pots Challenge!!!!!!
(A message from Zack Tverstol, one of the Twin Cities premier coffeehouse woodpushers/clock-slammers.)
An informal chess party at a festive location. Will take place at the Expresso Royale Café in Dinkytown (intersection of 14th Ave and 4th St: more exactly, the site is in the middle of the block on the west side of 14th Ave, just north of 4th Street) starting at
7:00 pm Friday night. This is near a major bus line. Call me, Zack Tverstol, with any questions at 612-408-1754.

A CRUMMY FIVE BUCKS, re-entry $5, game in 5 no delay, blitz rules apply, and we will be going by clock move, not touch move (no need for USCF memberships). The rules to pots are pretty simple: The entry fee will get you 20 chips. If you lose a game you put down 2 chips and leave the table. To win the chips you need to win two games in a row. If you win, draw, win, you keep playing until you win two in a row. In the event of a draw, the player who held the table gets to stay no matter what color. A player that is winning on one table can leave and go to another table if the pot on the other table is bigger than the one that they are fighting for. This restarts their winning cycle. If you are eliminated, you can get back into the action for $5. The coffee shop closes at ten so every hour we will be raising the amount the loser has to leave on the table. The person with the most chips at the end of the night wins the entire pot.
I have several strong experts and A class players willing to play, as well as a few novices that don’t mind spending $5 dollars for blitz lessons.

CHESSNUTS RESULTS ARE POSTED. (10/20)
The winners of the Chessnuts Challenge are: Sean Nagle, Victor Adler and Aron Kaptsan with 4 points each. Dan Nordlund won the U1800 section. It was a great event starting with free Subway sandwiches, a Simul and a lecture. With five Masters all vying for the top $1200 prize there were no easy games. The top board was posted live on the Internet, a first for Minnesota chess. The site was sponsored by Concordia College. You should put this on your calendar as a must play event for next year. Link to crosstables.  http://www.uschess.org/msa/XtblMain.php?200810196431
Games should be posted at the chessnut site soon. Thanks to Brian Thompson and
 Dan McClintic!

NORTHERN GAMES(10/4)
We have posted the games from Northern Open. Click on the link above.
Two weeks until the chessnuts from North Dakota hold their annual event. Go to    www.ndchessnut.com  for details or the schedule page.

A NOTE ABOUT THE WEEKEND EVENTS (9/25)
Just a warning about the prize information listed for the two events on the right, this weekend's Castle events. Ignore the piece that says " (entries minus $80)". That item is a left over from back when we had to come up with a monthly sum for rent, and so had to make a minimum amount every Saturday. That was true up in the old Nordeast, but it is not true at the Bridge Center. Now, we just get charged a fix amount per person per day. Our recent schedules are put together fairly sloppily.
Now days, we pretty much pay out everything we take in, minus the per person room fees, the charge to rate the tournament, and a small amount for our bank account. So the prizes are much larger than the announcement suggests.

HALF WAY AT THE NORTHERN OPEN (9/20)
Special thanks to Mike Wangen and Mike Trettel for donating their entry fees to the tournament. They could not play but kindly helped us out! Bill Harrison was good enough to rent a skittles room for us and the Moms. The Dads hung out in the bar. We have 64 players with Kevin Wasiluk joining us today. The tough games come Sunday when the top players meet. So far Russ Swanson, Kevin Landman and
Leonardo Segal have won upset prizes. Dan will get the standings posted Late Sunday or early Monday.

MR. BILL IS A HAPPY ORGANIZER (9/17)
This tournament is not backed by the bank account of our state organization. It is only backed by the organizer, William Murray. We were hoping to get at least fifty players, and so are more than pleased to announce that we have already 43 early entries. That includes several big guys like Sean Nagle, Victor Adler and Wilson Gibbins. And I know of at least three more who will be coming, presuming a certain young man gets his homework done and a certain old man gets his wife's permission. The third guys is a Shariff(?), a 16 year old with a 1800 rating whose last name I could not decipher, but whose entry is in the mail. It is very gratifying to welcome at least three guys from Iowa, and one from St. Cloud. So our event will be possibly the strongest and largest Minnesota event (excluding the state championship, of course), with pretensions of being an interstate tournament.

ROGER RUDOLPH TRIUMPHS (9/13)
Roger showed he still has it after all these years. Fighting back against the mighty youngster Kevin Bu. Kevin attacked with all his youthful energy but the old lion held on, and then went on to win. Such was the excitement at the TCCL on Friday. Hopeful someone can get the score and analysis published. There is still time to enter the TCCL and receive a bye for Sept. Next meeting is Oct. 10th. First round results are posted at the MSCA site.
http://minnesotachess.org./e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?144
The schedule for the coming months at the Castle are posted on the Schedule page.
Early entries for the Northern are on the schedule page. Dan has a few more to add.

WE'RE ARE PLAYING LABOR DAY (8/31)
At least Ed Conway, Jeff Chandler and Dan Voje will be there for the Action Quads. Be there by 7:15.

I also want to apologize for the delay in getting the last two weeks worth of tournaments rated. The last Think and two action quads should get rated by Tuesday. My muffler-less Camry has died, so I was a bit stranded in the Nordeast, but I have a new Ranger now, so I can get back in action. I was also off in New York City for five days. It was mostly to help my niece move into NYU, but the trip also provided me with a number of sad chess tales, that anyone who shows up at the Castle will have to endure.
(Yeah, like that's a burden for you schmoes. The most useful foreign words our chess vocabulary are not zugzwang, en passant, or j"adoube. It's schadenfreude.)

MEATY MITTS IS MINNESOTA'S NEWEST MASTER (7/29)
While a lot of us were off to Franklin last weekend for free food and small venue chess, Kevin Wasiluk went to Chicago for the Class Championship, in search of bigger game. He defeated Alex Betenali and a 2300 IM, and finished above the glorious 2200 level. If you go to the USCF website and check out the news stories, you can see a picture of the back of this young man's head as he plays Yermo. The crosstable linked there shows him finishing with 2211, but the tournament history page includes his result from the last Castle Think event, which brings him to 2203. Congrats to our former club champion. It's great to have him back in town after a year in Germany.

GOOD LOOKING SITE (7/2)
A few observations about the previous tournament announcement. I checked out the site with Bill Murray last week and liked what I saw. This hotel is right off the freeway, directly across from the Cathedral, and is very easy to reach by car or by bus. Plenty of parking outside, and a nice room inside. They have their own restaurant and bar, so you can built up your blood sugar before facing the chesspunks, and then drown your sorrow if the battle goes bad. Dan Voje will be directing. Bill is planning on six rounds, game in 90 minutes. We both like the length, as it gives you a chance to take a half point bye, or a setback in a game, and still be in the hunt. This will be an anti-Goichberg format. Instead of going a long distance to pay a large entry fee for a remote chance at a big prize, we will offer a short drive and low entry fee. Hope you'll write this on your calendar.

FINDING ED'S BOOKS A NEW HOME (06/26)
I received the following notice from Bill Hempel...

"I thought the Chess Castle members may be interested in some chess books that were owned by my father, Ed Hempel. He had, I would guess, about 300 to 400 chess books that we are selling at a Garage Sale this weekend For about 1 – 2 dollars a book. The address is at 5631 Aldrich Ave North in Brooklyn Center. Garage Sale is on Friday and Saturday  the 27th and 28th. Thanks - Bill Hempel

EDWIN HEMPEL, RIP (03/24)
Today I was informed by the family of Ed Hempel, that he passed away at the age of 86. The funeral will be held next Saturday in Crystal, with details in Thursday's newspaper.

You can really tell the established players at a chess club when they enjoy reserved seating, when there is a chair at a table that no one else sits at, unless they are sure a certain regular is taking a day off. Ed Hempel was such a player at the old Castle site on Snelling Ave in St Paul. He had his acknowledged spot, which he shared with his large thermos and a very well worn BHG clock. Worn down by many games played at all kinds of time controls, in Ed's scrappy style. He played in about five hundred tournaments there throughout the nineties. I last saw him just before the turn of the century, at the Higher Ground Academy where we landed for about a year, and the poor guy was already looking thinner. He wasn't well enough to play tournament chess since. He was a great guy, a real character, and a very big part of our club for many, many years. Our condolences to his family.

Minnesota Open 2008

SOME POINTERS ON THIS WEEKEND'S MINNESOTA OPEN (02/11)

First - Note that this year a two day option is being offered, which simply means instead of playing Friday night, you can come in a little earlier on Saturday morning and play the first two rounds at a faster time control. You join the rest of the field at round three. This is a practical option for those who cannot play Friday evening, and who would rather play a couple of faster games than take a half point bye. Details on the right. (It is not clear whether one can, upon suffering a disaster Friday night, just withdraw and re-enter in the two day at a discounted rate, such as is seen at the bigger Goichberg events.)

Second -Do everyone a favor, and speed up the Friday night registration process by checking the status of your national and state memberships. I'm sure you have all looked up yourselves on the USCF site to follow the ups and downs of your ratings. Well, take a moment to go there an verify that your membership is current. You can also go here to confirm the status of your Minnesota membership. Don't be one of those doofuses who hold up the line, scratching their head and saying "Gee, I'm pretty sure my membership is current! Lets see, I could of swore I renewed last April, or was it August?.."

BOBBY FISCHER DEAD AT 64 (01/18)
Just saw this news flash at www.chessbase.com .

MATTHEW DAHL IS OUR NEW CLUB CHAMPION (01/13)
He raises two questions...  Is he the youngest person ever to win the annual club championship? And has anyone else done so with a perfect score of seven wins? That put him a full two points ahead of second place Michael Yang, with Jeff Chandler (the tournament director) and Johnny Leighton tie for third with 4.5. Congratulations to this fine young fellow. He, and his father Dave, have been among the most active players at our club over the last few years. And they prove that nice guys can finish first, as they also hold the record for having bought the most trays of cookies and brownies with them when coming to play. We had 18 players at this event, and it has been submitted to USCF, so you should find it rated there tomorrow.

REACHING THE CLUB? (01/08)
By which I don't mean road directions to the Bridge Center. No, this post is about the change in contact information for the Chess Castle. For many years this has been the phone number and e-mail address for Dan Voje, who managed the club since just before we lost our long standing lease in the Midway area of Saint Paul. But starting now, my personal information has been removed from the website as I am no longer willing or able to answer questions about the Castle. I no longer direct the vast majority of our tournaments (and may not be running any more in the future), and am often up in the air as to who IS suppose to be covering a particular event. This can be a real problem, such as last week when I talked to a stranger about our club, and the scheduled Sunday Quad tournament. A couple of other guys and him waited a half hour for the event to start, but a TD never showed. The club has suffered over the last year from a lack of dependable volunteers to run events and cover other tasks. Such as the one in question: being the person someone can call if they have questions about the club, or even just chess in general. I have gotten many of the latter as people would find our site while doing web searches for chess information in Minnesota. So until we get a new contact person, if you cannot find what you need to know right here, you'll have to stop by the club during a tournament and talk to the director. Added note: Bill Murray (Mr. Bill) has no connection with the club and will not be keeping up the website.

POINTERS FOR THE WHIPPED AND LAZY (11/21)
This posting is just to alert chess warriors to the possibilities for taking a few byes this weekend. The TD is willing to give out two byes in any of the first five rounds. This should make this event very doable, even for the pathetic sad sacks amongst us who must spend Friday trailing behind their wives through the Mall of America, slowing being transformed into a beast of burden. I would of thought most of your wives would of been happy to ditch you on the busiest of all shopping days. Heck, given the general ugliness of the typical tournament chess player, I'm surprise she'll even be seen in public with most of you! Well, I don't know what the problem is, but I have heard complaints about the timing and length of this event. So here is the solution: don't play at all on Friday! Go ahead and make your boss happy, and just show up Saturday, and we'll give you a free point.

What makes this so practical is the class nature of this event. You'll be playing against only your peers, and so you can afford to spot those schmoes a point. The field will be too evenly matched for anyone to run away with it, especially with six games to play. You can show up well rested and well loved and easily make up the difference. This also applies to guys who may have to see more family Saturday night. Shucks, we'll get you home by four in the afternoon.

Trust me: no matter what your family says, after spending two days of a four day weekend with you, they are ready for a break. They're only saying "it's not so" just to spare your feelings. Well, spare theirs, and come and play chess with your fellow nerds!

SEE YOU IN MOORHEAD  (10/15)
We should all be thankful that yet another nearby, smaller city has managed to do what we seemingly cannot... To offer a weekend chess tournament that is inexpensive for the masses, yet has a prize fund capable of drawing titled players. For years this was accomplished by the fine folks in Sioux Falls. Sadly, that long running event seems to have evaporated, and there is no Governors Cup this year. Add to that, on a much smaller scale, our own Northern Open is also skipping a beat, and will not happen this year. So we should make an effort to support this new effort being put on to our northwest. The details are directly below, in red. Also, do not be intimidated by the thought of trying to find an address in a strange city. This is very easy to locate. Eighth Street is simply the last exit on I-94 before you cross into North Dakota, and the address is eight blocks north.
NOTE: what with the proximity to Winnipeg and the more favorable exchange rates, the good people of North Dakota are drawing players from Canada to this tournament. And so we are taking this chance to get in another edition of the Minnesota - Manitoba match. Just like the last two times we contested this up in Winnipeg, the match will be embedded in the tournament. So every Canadian you play in the last three rounds will count towards the match score. We currently hold the trophy, and trust you'll help keep it that way. We just want to take it on a little road trip. We don't want to lose custody!
ALSO: For some lame reason, this event did not get mentioned in the last, late issue of the Northern Chess News. Not a good job of assisting our nearby colleagues. So help out by calling this to the attention of any of your chess playing friends.

POTS THIS SUNDAY - VERY CHEAP EVENT - NO MEMBERSHIPS REQUIRED (7/10)
I see this tournament has failed to reach our front page, yet another indication of how the managing of this club is headed south. At least it made the NCN, but not with a lot of details. So here they are...

This is an unrated speed event, with a format that we tried last year, that was well received. The charge is a measly three dollars, which is just enough to cover our rental charges, so there is a prize fund of zero. Er, ah, I mean, a prize fund rich in glory and the esteem of your noble colleagues. We'll open at six, and start playing at six-thirty. Absolutely no memberships of any kind needed. Time control is three minutes + a three second delay. For your three dollars, you get a pile of poker chips. Pots is simply where two guys sit down to play, and the loser leaves behind a chip as he gets up to make room for the next challenger. If you win two games in a row, you collect the pot. We'll run enough tables to keep everyone busy. Like with poker tournaments, after awhile (an hour?) the stakes go up. We let people buy back in if they get swept too quickly. We'll shoot to be done before ten. I believe the winner of the first edition of this tournament was Zach Tverstol. If you know any coffee house schmoes who think they're hot stuff, yet never play rated chess 'cause they hardly have scratch for the cup of coffee let alone a real entry fee, please call them up, call them out, and give 'em a ride down to the Bridge Center, as this is their chance! Yes, help us spread the word to help make up for the weak publicity. Will trash talk be allowed? I dunno, it hardly seems like pots without it. We may leave this, and other details up to the vote of the players! Wow, democracy. In the old days it would of been a refreshing change from tyranny; now it's just a break from anarchy.

UPDATE TO THE FOLLOWING POST (4/27)
We have picked up a couple of more players, and are still looking for another, or possibly three more. The field now has Curt the 16th, Medhat Feshir, Dan Voje, Matthew Dahl, Phil Stevenson, Mike Dokken and Larry Tordsen. A broad range of ages and ratings. You should be able to catch me at home after eight tonight, at 612.706.2865. If you do decide to e-mail me at voje@chesscastle.com , it is a very good idea to put the word "CHESS" in the subject line. Being I get my e-mails through this website, which cannot afford spam filters, I am bombarded with over 800 messages a day. Something to keep in mind if I ever ignore a message from you; it just could be it was accidentally deleted amid all of the drug and porn ads I have to plow through. Be sure to call first if you want to play - no same day registration, of course.

OUR FIRST TWO-DAY EVENT AT THE NEW SITE (3/8) updated
Add on Dr. Ekrem Gozum and Phil Stevenson. This is getting to be a goodly amount of people, considering that there was no early entry discount, which is how we usually learn who plans on playing.
The Late Winter Think is coming up this weekend. Medhat Feshir, Dan Voje, and "Mr.Bill" Murray will be playing, and we hope to see you there too. Looking ahead, Professor Durocher is hosting another fine tournament at St. Olaf college on April 14th. A nice spring drive to a picturesque campus. I was amazed at the number of strong players he drew at his last event 16 months ago: three masters and four 2100+ experts! Click here for details.

SATURDAY IS MOVING DAY (12/27)
We will start at 12:30 pm. A few items are going to the Bridge Center, some tables and chairs are going into storage, and a lot of stuff is going into the dumpster. We have a commitment for one pick-up truck, and could use some more.

KEVIN WASILUK GETS HIS SECOND PLATE (12/18)
Congratulations to the young man from North St. Paul, who has now won the club championship for the second time in three years. He only gave up one draw to last year's champion, Arkady Shemyakin. He was followed by the top two members of our Chess Castle TCCL team, and Michael Yang. Thanks to Kevin Ahtou for helping out with the organizing of this event. Thanks to the Dahl's for the Krisy Kreme donuts and to the Dokkens for bringing back the chess Christmas Tree.

WHERE IS THE LIST OF QUALIFIERS FOR THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP? (12/08)

Good question. In keeping with the theme of the lame-duck cutting back, I am going to make you qualify your own self. The rules have been the same for several years: this is an event for those who have supported the club throughout the year by playing in our events so we could pay our rent. Basically, this means someone who has played in at least six regular-rated Saturday events throughout 2006. Thursday Knighters can also be included in this total. You can count it twice if you were the clear winner of the tournament (quads wins don't apply for this). You can also give yourself a half point for each quick chess event you played in, and a third of a point for each Monday Night Action Quad. Given the rating vanity of all chess players, I am positive that anyone reading this on the web has already been to the USCF site and tracked their list of tournaments played. Just go there and count up your total Chess Castle activity for this year.
I have always granted other bonus points. We give two points for any previous champion, and qualify anyone who has actually done some work for our club, and also qualify all members of the TCCL Chess Castle team. But most of these guys are already regulars, and don't need the boost. There are two groups that get special consideration that they may need. The first is the out-of-town players. We appreciate those who were willing to drive long distances to play in our events, especially considering all the metro players who never bother. In the past I have included a couple of such guys who played a few times despite the drive. Nick Lawrence of Rochester, or Prof. Durocher from Northfield, come to mind. Also included are those who have the best excuse of all for not having the time to play in six events at the club, and that's the people who have put in a great deal of hours towards keeping chess alive in our state. By which I mean MSCA presidents and the active tournament directors; for example Shu Lee, Doug Olson, The Big Fish, Ed Conway, Dave Kuhns etc.
If you have any questions about your status, or your on the bubble for qualifying, you should call Dan at 612.706.2865 and discuss it with me. Big Warning: if some annoying person decides not to plead his questionable status with the president, but just shows up a week from Saturday and pretends to belong in the tournament field, well, I know very well who the regulars are, and if I check on your numbers Saturday night (I can't do it at the club as we no longer have a line out) and find you short, you won't be paired come Sunday morning.
I'll try to get the actual tournament details up in a few days. But all the club regulars know we use the Think format, and what that is. And I am still debating whether to us a 15 or a 30 second delay. The charge for the event will be $15, and in recognition of the many father-and-son pairs that have been so active at the Castle recently, these guys will get in at two for $20. I had thought earlier of opening up the field and trying to raise some funds with this event, but no longer. The space echoes too much, and given that the club is going to the Bridge Center, where the expenses will be a lot less, we don't need the cash.
More important points: the meeting listed in the last NCN for Sunday after noon, concerning the future of the club, will be held a different time, perhaps just earlier in the morning, as our first Sunday round usually starts at noon.  Also, if you are a kid, be warned that the TD will not be tolerating any disruptive behavior at all. Again, the main floor echoes too much, along with the stairs running up to the bathroom, for horseplay. Any of that, and your parents will be picking you up early.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP LOOKS LIKE DECEMBER 16TH AND 17TH (11/09)
Our downstairs space is not the best. It's warm enough, but the heater is loud, so we'll have to try to work it before and between rounds. The floor is pretty crummy in spots, but thanks to Jeff Chandler, who spent a lot of last Sunday spreading and collecting sweeping compound, we have the dust cut down greatly. The one thing that is better is the large amount of space. Which means we can be very liberal on who we invite to the club championship. Because this is such a popular event, I always had to worry about running out of room before. Like the last several years, it will be a Think format. And like last one, there will be a modest entry fee to help us raise some funds. Might as well get it in before the New Year.

YOU CAN'T CALL IN, SO JUST WALK IN (11/09)
One of the differences in being on the ground floor is that we have no access to telephone lines. And for a two month stay, it would certainly not be worthwhile to have one put in. I am debating on whether to get a cell phone to cover this, but that wouldn't have until next week at the earliest. And frankly, I may not bother. As useful as a phone is in general, it mostly just seems to be used by the same people for the same lame reasons. There are those who call up Saturday morning to find out what the tournament is. It's work putting out this information on the web, and formatting it for the NCN, but that is not enough for some. They need the personal touch. And then there's those who are always late for a tournament, and always calling you to say so. Now I guess their just going to have to make the effort to be on time, to arrive  before the cut-off. It is unfortunate for the chesspunks who need to call their folks, but we'll see what we can do.

MAIN FLOOR CHESS(11/5)
Everything, even the stuff nailed down, was moved to the first floor late on Saturday. Special thanks to Carl Benson who showed up just to help move and carried lots of the heavy stuff. We will be here for the months of Nov. and Dec. It is not ideal but the free rent will help the club's finances when it is relocated. A meeting went late to try and decide on the club's new direction. Stay tuned for details.

UPDATE ON OUR EVICTION (11/02)
We are moving this Saturday night to the old bank space on the first floor. The lighting might be a bit weak, but the landlord said he would work on it with us if need be. We do have the space free for the next two months, right up to the new year (do I see a party?) in exchange for surrendering our space a month early. We have had a problem lately with other tenants locking the door as they go through, so it will be nice to have our own separate door for our remaining stay. With all of this extra space, I think we can adopt a liberal policy in inviting players to our club championship, which looks to be held December 16th and 17th.

HOMELESS AGAIN (10/30)
Yet another dark cloud over our venerable Castle.
Today we were informed by our landlord that the chess club must vacate our space by the end of November. We have been on thirty day notice ever since the Lander Group took over the building from the defunct Polish While Eagle Insurance Company some years back. I found their conditions unsettling back then, in that the new owners would not offer us our old year long lease, but only commit to month-to-month. I believe they wanted flexibility with tenants, as they hoped to either sell the building or rent the whole thing to one customer. Well, we have gone on a long time in this uncertain state, in our dilapidated building, but the end for Second Ave NE has finally arrived.
They would actually like to take over our club space right away, and have offered us the use of the large first floor for the next month in exchange. If this area is usable, I may take them up on the offer, as the rent would be free for November, money we need to weather a re-location. And there might be the chance to use that area for some weeks into December. I'll have to check it out; there might be a problem with lighting. And one would still have to go up the stairs to reach the only bathroom in the building. There could well be no on site phone service during our remaining days.
Keep an eye on this space for further developments. Note in particular possible changes in the schedule for November. We may try to fit in the club championship early to be sure it gets held.
Also note: there will be a meeting Saturday night, after the last round of the Tornado. This should be around seven o’clock. I would recommend attendance to only those who are either club regulars (or their managers!) or those who are willing to contribute effort or support. Those with just opinions and ideas are encouraged to stick with the Minnesota Chess Yahoo group. It could well be those who show up will be drafted to move our stuff down to the first floor, but it should be very short work with even only several people. Of course, anyone with experience in organizing or running chess events, or with rental property markets in general, would definitely be welcomed.

ANOTHER PRESIDENT FOR LIFE GETS HIS STATUE TOPPLED (10/20)
(
Which is how club regular Bob Tenney would put it.) Just a note to inform people that Dan Voje will no longer be the club president/manager/whatever-we-call it starting the beginning of December. And I will be moving on totally by the end of the year. So we'll have to see what can be done about running the club.

THE CASTLE COULD BE GOING INTERNATIONAL LABOR DAY (9/03)
At the Saturday tournament, a spectator appeared during round three and followed the action on many boards. He described himself as an Austrian International Master whose at the University for a few days for a seminar. And he promised to return Monday night to play in our Action Quads. A heads-up to all tough guys whose ratings could put them in the top quad. And, yes, we will be open that holiday evening, as usual. The Labor Day Open had an excellent turnout of 22 players, and the top prize of $75 went to Kevin Wasiluk for three and a half points.

IT'S HOMECOMING WEEKEND FOR ADARSH KONDA (7/14)
Adarsh is back from San Jose for a visit, and is playing in the MI Think. He is at the expert level now, which leads us to wonder... has he given up napping at the chessboard during his games? Other additions to the field since the last post are Don Aldrich, Mike Wangan, the Leighton brothers, the Dahl father-and-son team, and Ben Cherner. So turnout is looking good.

ARKADY SHEMYAKIN IS THE NEW KING AT THE CASTLE (1/15)
Congratulations to this St. Thomas University professor and long time member of the Chess Castle team for the Twin Cities Chess League. Jimmy Simonse was in first place for the first six rounds, having taken a one game lead after the fifth round Sunday morning. First Mr. Bill slowed him down a bit with a draw in round six, which left Arkady a half-point behind Jimmy in their last round battle. Also note that two of the top five finishers both defeated by one Kevin Ma in his first two games! Not bad for a 1400 rated player. A special thanks to the Dokkens and the Wasiluks for all of those Krispy Kremes. We also appreciate Kevin Ahtou getting us an extra table and chairs and Dave Dahl for helping with the clean-up.
